Dear BORN members,
We are pleased to announce that BORN in partnership with the University of Pittsburgh has received funding from the Society to Improve Diagnosis in Medicine (SIDM) to conduct a quality improvement (QI) project around early onset sepsis (EOS) screening practices and antibiotic stewardship for late preterm/term infants. This is a critical area for improving newborn healthcare delivery systems, given what is known regarding wide practice variation in EOS screening across the US and the recent recommendation changes put forth by the American Academy of Pediatrics Committee on the Fetus and Newborn (AAP-COFN).
We will be recruiting 5-10 BORN nurseries to participate in this QI collaborative. If you are interested, please complete the brief survey found at the link below. At this stage getting in touch does not mean you are committing to the project. We are engaging potential sites very early in the process so we can produce the most feasible project plan possible. PARTICIPANT EXPECTATIONS:
- Obtain appropriate institutional approval (either IRB or Quality Review Committee). Supporting documents will be shared with all participating sites.
- Implement a QI initiative with a multidisciplinary team that aligns with current AAP-COFN EOS guideline and aims to reduce antibiotic use but is tailored to your newborn nursery.
- If your nursery is already engaged in this work, it does not necessarily exclude your participation in this collaborative.
- Collect 4 months of baseline data and 8 months of prospective data on lab evaluations and empiric antimicrobial use among term newborns
- Participate in kick-off and wrap-up on-line events with the study team and other BORN sites and monthly local team meetings.

- MOC Part 4 credit for all clinicians at site that meaningfully engage in the process
- On-going support in designing and implementing your QI project
- Site PI listed by name in acknowledgments of manuscripts
- Reduce well newborn exposure to empiric antibiotics, mother-baby separation, length of stay and hospitalization costs at your nursery
